shinefly asked: Fantastic photos. I sure hope you have 1,000+ followers at least - if not you deserve them. What camera do you use? seriously the shots of the people in the water with the crazy stars in the background are UNREAL how do you do that?
Thanks so much! I wish I had that many followers. If you get 860 of your friends to hop on the bandwagon, then you could make that wish come true.
I get a lot of questions about what I shoot with. The short answer is a Canon T2i generally with a Canon 35mm F2. A longer answer can be found in this post.
The interstellar surf series was shot at dawn on local beaches with the same prime lens mentioned above. The stars and nebulae are images from the Hubble telescope and you can find most of them on hubblesite.org. NASA actually doesn’t retain copyright on any of these images, which is fantastic news for artists. I try to pair up my photos with stellar phenomena that balance well with the surfers and the landscape. The rest is all Photoshop. The first thing I do is replace the sky with the stars, and from there I start building reflections and tweaking the lighting and colors on the water. The resulting images vary slightly in size but for the most part, can be reproduced at high resolution up to 16x24”. The first two prints I made are shown here.
